New firmware update gives performance boost to Nikon D5 (23.06.2016)

Amsterdam, The Netherlands, 23rd June 2016: Nikon has released new firmware, C: Ver. 1.10, that expands function of its flagship Nikon FX-format digital SLR camera, the D5. This firmware offers a major upgrade to the camera’s shooting capabilities, delivering four key improvements. It offers extended maximum recording times for movies, including 4K UHD, while adding three convenient functions, such as flicker reduction for still photography. In addition to these four major changes, some additional updates* have been applied to the new firmware.

Video Recording

When shooting movies with the D5, it is now possible to continue filming for up to 29 minutes 59 seconds, regardless of the frame size/frame rate and movie quality — and that includes 4K UHD (3840 × 2160), for which the maximum recording time was previously limited to 3 min. Movies are recorded across up to eight files of 4 GB each.

The D5 now also offers an electronic vibration reduction (VR) function for video recording using FX- and DX-based movie image areas*2 (for HD and full-HD*3 movie recording). This reduces the effect of camera shake in the horizontal, vertical and rotational directions (centering on the lens), and is convenient when filming without stabilizers like a tripod, or when time or location constraints make it impossible to use one. Used in combination with NIKKOR’s optical VR technology, the benefits are even more apparent.

Still Photography

To minimize exposure variations, the D5 now incorporates a flicker reduction function for use in still photography*4. With flicker reduction enabled, the camera detects the peak brightness level and automatically shifts the shutter release timing slightly to help achieve stable exposures and colour reproduction.

Dynamic-area AF allows you to achieve focus on a subject even if it briefly leaves your selected primary focus point, by using information from surrounding points*5. In addition to the existing 25-, 72- and 153-point options, the D5 now also offers dynamic-area AF with 9 points, which is effective when you want to achieve focus on even smaller areas of a moving subject.

The new firmware is available for download from June 23, 2016. It can be downloaded free of charge from the following URL.

* Details regarding "additional updates" are provided on the firmware's free download page (Nikon Download Center).

*2 Image area will be slightly smaller.

*3 Not available with 1920 × 1080 crop settings

*4 During viewfinder shooting (except when shooting with the mirror up).

*5 In dynamic-area AF with 9, 25 or 72 points, the number of focus points actually used may be less than 9, 25 or 72, depending on the selected primary focus point.
