What can we learn from the technique of car photography?
Car photography is complex in its nature and the biggest issue to overcome along the journey is light falling onto highly reflective curved surfaces. The work of Tim Wallace is globally recognised not only because of his works’ highly creative style and his talent  but Tim is also very well known for achieving much of his photography ‘in camera’ with the clever and adoptive use of lighting.

There are many forms of car photography within the industry from the fast action dynamic shooting of racing through to the brochure and billboard work that focuses on well presented overall car shots and detail photography of the cars features. The way that we light and shoot a car changes the feel and view of it hugely and in this intimate workshop we look at many of these different aspects and how we can work with light and our camera / lenses to get the emotional feel and capture that we want to achieve.

Shooting on location together, we will look at locations, how we choose those and what impact that can have on the overall feel and final results that we achieve. How to place the car within the environment, what choices we should consider and why. We will be looking at the impact of shooting at different distances and positions as well as choices of focal length and aperture and how these can impact on our final images.

Tim will demonstrate and guide you through how we can use lighting one location to totally change a capture and the overall final feel of a image. We experiment with flash lights, modifiers and natural light. We will work with a single strobe head and look at shooting dramatic, almost studio like quality photos. The day will also involve building up complex lighting setups using multiple heads with different modifiers in action to ‘build up a scene’ shooting in camera as well as alternate techniques that can be used to the same effect for those that may only be able to work with one or two heads in their normal day top day shooting.

What to bring with you?
Tim will be offering guidance and advice throughout and you should bring our own camera equipment as suggested below as you will be shooting alongside Tim and putting into practice what you learn.
